The dance of the water bug

 

Further testing of the video modes of the Olympus E-P2.  I found these great little water bugs near the shore and got some great HD captures.  Not sure of the exact variety of these guys but in the warmer months they are quite common, I suspect a water beetle:

A water beetle is a beetle adapted to living in water. Water beetles rise to the water surface and take atmospheric air into their tracheal systems. There are approximately 2000 species of water beetles. The rest marine species tend to live in the intertidal zone. Water beetles are black, brown, or greenish and .08 to 1.57 inches long.

Many water beetles carry an air bubble underneath their abdomens, which both provides an air supply, and prevents water from getting into the spiracles. Others have the surface of their exoskeleton modified to form a plastron, or "physical gill", which permits direct gas exchange with the water. The hind legs are strong like the grasshoppers except it is not for jumping but for swimming. The wing covers are usually grooved on the female and smooth on the male. They have fringed hind legs with hair adapted for swimming. Adults hibernate in underwater soil during a good portion of the year. Water beetles are attracted to lights at night. Most families of water beetles have larvae that are also aquatic; many have aquatic larvae and terrestrial adults.

The genocidal racist Helen Thomas has again made anti-semitic statements of an amazing and disgusting degree.  This ridiculous attempt at a columnist should immediately be fired from her job at Hearst media organization, be stripped of her White House press credentials, and be shunned as a Holocaust denying, exodus forcing, racist asshole that she is.  The reality is the media is so comfortable with the worldwide antisemitic baseline leftist standard that this will all go away in a few days, with a few small heads placed in the sand.  The excuse for this behavior will continue to be oh that Crazy old Helen Thomas...  Thus the world again slowly emboldens the Syrian peoples whom refer to themselves as the mythological Palestinians, and another 4000 rockets will be fired upon innocent cities in Israel.  

If this vulture remains up front and present in any form other than a passing fart in the White House press corp, you President Barack Hussein Obama, must also accept statements such as: Blacks should leave America, women shouldn't vote, Kenyans' should not hold the presidency,  and other parody statements I am too angry to coin.  I'm not through yet, you Oprah Winfrey must also accept this new reality as your magazine O is published by the same Hearst media group that is fully supporting this 90 year old racist relic that is Helen Thomas.

Woolly Bear Made Good!

 

 About four weeks ago we found a woolly bear caterpillar being used as a velcro hockey puck by our local feral kitty, and made rescue.  After some great research and setup we placed him in a small enclosure with natural surroundings.  We fed him a steady diet of collards, romaine, and spinach.  I anxiously awaited the mothy Christmas to come!  Being that our woolly bear was obviously in his late spring larval calorie gathering mode, I knew the time was short before we must wish her farewell.  The caterpillar began feverishly building a cocoon three weeks ago, and was finished in 48 hours!  After two weeks of waiting this gorgeous fully colored Leopard Moth appeared!  I have resumed feeding her and nightly placing her outside to attract a mate, so we may keep the moth soap opera ongoing.  updates may follow assuming my precious moth is not predated or willfully journeyed on her own.

*The Giant Leopard Moth or Eyed Tiger Moth (Hypercompe scribonia) is a moth of the family Arctiidae. It is distributed throughout the Southern and Eastern United States from New England to Mexico. The obsolete name Ecpantheria scribonia is still occasionally encountered.

This species has a wingspan of 3 inches (nearly 8 cm). The wings of this moth are bright white with a pattern of neat black blotches, some solid and some hollow. The abdomen is dark blue with orange markings, the male has a narrow yellow line on the sides. Its legs have black and white bands. Adult moths are rather strictly nocturnal and do not generally fly before nightfall (Fullard & Napoleone 2001).

The caterpillar is of the "Woolly Bear" kind, with a thick coat of black bristles (setae) and red bands between its segments which become conspicuous when caterpillar rolls into a ball for defense. It should not be touched, as its setae may break off and cause a rash.
