When my financier (spelled right?) walked in while I was sweatily playing Street Fighter IV 3D on my new 3DS and said" "WOW" I knew something was wrong...
I can now and very expensively confirm that the Nintendo 3DS does in fact require two eyes to function properly. I'm not quite sure why I had any doubts, I suppose it may be seeded in the fact that the initial reporting was of the "3D effect"... This being the case I assumed it was more of a depthy screen hack, this was not the case, it is in fact a true stereoscopic parralax 3D system. Sharp's parallax barrier is a little different for it is actually a 'switching LCD' that allows for both 2D and 3D imaging without the need for special glasses or goggles. When this switching LCD is switched off, the TFT-LCD displays 2D imaging as normal, but when the parallax barrier is switched on, it controls the way light leaves the display, meaning different patterns of light reach the left and right eye. Thus meaning fail for the stereoblind among us, IE: ME!
I know the haters gonna hate and say I should have already been aware of this before dropping MSRP $249 on an assumption, but I'm really not disappointed, having never missed a Nintendo release the obtainment of new technology via Nintendo Sunday was a given. The Street Pass, Pedometer, and ultra res screen make up for it all, and thank the gods for that little 3D slider that minimizes or full on disables the 3D on the side. Don't mind me I'll be quietly leveling in the corner in good old 2D if you need me, over and out...
April Fools? No.
